Scope of Application:
Disulfiram is commonly used in behavioral therapy to help patients develop an aversion to alcohol consumption. The drug has certain toxicity and should not be used long-term. Typically, it is administered for 3–5 days at a daily dose of approximately 500 mg.
Disulfiram is suitable for:
Adults without a history of mental illness who are voluntarily seeking to abstain from alcohol.
It is particularly suitable as a measure before entering a specialized rehabilitation program after detoxification.
Disulfiram should not be used continuously for more than 3–6 months, as prolonged use may lead to accumulation in the body and cause severe side effects. During treatment, patients must absolutely avoid consuming alcohol-containing beverages to prevent an ethanol-disulfiram reaction.
